In this section, you will find strategies to deal with the most common and problematic types of questions on the reading test.
TYPE 1: TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN and YES/NO/NOT GIVEN - TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN is about FACTS in the text
- To find the answer to a question, DON'T read the WHOLE passage. It's time-consuming. The answers come in order. It means, for example, the answer to question #2 will come AFTER the answer to Q1 and BEFORE the answer to Q3. Thus, a very good strategy to locate the answer is NOT to focus only on any one question, but to have an eye on the question coming after it. - The technique to solve YES/NO/NOT GIVEN questions are exactly the same. TYPE 2: MATCHING
- The first type of questions often ask you to match a HEADING with a SECTION (paragraph), or ask you "Which paragraph contains the following information...." - The other type of questions ask you to CATEGORIZE the information, e.g., "Match each statement with the correct person," "Classifying the following statement as applying to..." General strategies - Read the questions & underline key words before you start to read the passage. - Locate the key words in each section by skimming from the beginning of the passage. If you can't find the exact words, don't panic! Look for words or phrases that have SIMILAR MEANING. - The "CATEGORIZE" question type seem to be easier than the other one because the key words in the question are quite short, often a proper name (e.g., Rosa Park) or a term (e.g, utopia).
